What is a REAL Emergency?

Emergencies are UNEXPECTED events, or events you are UNPREPARED for that cause a CHANGE in you usual daily activities.

An EMERGENCY can be the night you sit down to eat dinner, and you have no ketchup for your burger. In this case, you usually just eat the burger plain and try to remember to buy more ketchup when you go food shopping.

Another EMERGENCY can be the day you wake up all stuffy and congested, with a sore throat and a cough. You stay home sick and then realize you have nothing to eat in your apartment.

One EMERGENCY is a day when the electric, gas, or water has to be turned off for repairs. How do you cook you pasta and grill your chicken that night?

Winter brings other potential EMERGENCIES- -12 of snow and the roads arent plow so the buses arent running and you have to stay home.

-Bitter cold weather that causes freeze- icy sidewalks, frozen water pipes, cars that wont start- so you are stuck indoors.

You sprain you ankle and cant do any errands and you didnt buy dinner yet.

There are other serious EMERGENCY SITUATIONS that you will need to stay inside you home.

-Hurricanes and heavy winds that make the power lines fall down make it dangerous to go outside.

-We read about bears wandering through South Orange last year- that was certainly a time when staying inside was the smart thing to do.

-There have been fugitives running from the police that were carrying guns and had already shot at people. Police helicopters circled South Orange looking in yards, alleys and rooftops trying to find the criminals before they injured anyone else.

These are all UNEXPECTED events that independent people need to prepare for. One part of EMERGENCY PREPAREDNES is food and other items you need everyday.

The bag of EMERGENCY SUPPLIES that you will get on Mantoux night is a start Go through the stuff- be sure you can use everything in the bag. Place the bag on a special shelf in you kitchen or closet- just for emergencies. If you already have some emergency supplies, just add to them. If you dont want something, trade it or give it to someone who needs it.

The other side of this newsletter has a list of suggested supplies. Place it where you keep your emergency supplies and check the list before you go shopping to see if you need something else. Try to keep all EMERGENCY supplies in one spot so you can get to them in an EMERGENCY.
